Prevent water damage in your home

Ever noticed black fungus growing around your windows or any damp areas inside your home? This is mould, and whilst it may ruin the look of your house or flat, it is nowhere near as damaging as the health problems it can create.

Mould typically grows in colder weather – flats in particular seem to be affected – due to the limited space to dry wet washing. The lack of central heating also means that mould will thrive, as cold air and damp combined allow the mould spores to populate the coldest and dampest areas. Condensation on windows is also a huge culprit, so you may notice that mould grows around the windows.

Tricky to remove permanently, mould can damage walls or any other surfaces they manage to grow onto. It can be incredibly hard to wash out of fabric. As for health problems, mould can cause lung issues, headaches, sinus infections, throat infections, tightness in breathing and much more. The longer you are exposed to mould, especially hazardous black mould, the more likely you are putting your health at risk. People with conditions such as lung issues should steer clear of entering a home with mould, due to the fungi’s ability to cause breathing problems.

If you are concerned about your own home, you should try to prevent an outbreak of mould. Homes should be kept well ventilated, and kept warm during the colder months. Wet washing should never be dried over radiators, as the damp will spread in the uprising of heat. Tumble dryers or hanging washing outside should be adopted instead, if possible. If you are already suffering from mould and finding that even expert mould remover sprays or bleach are not preventing its return, then it is probably best you contact an expert on damp and mould proofing to get some advice on how to better protect your home and your health.
